The Institute of Molecular Cell & Systems Biology in Glasgow welcomes UNSAM PhD student Ana Laura Tohmé

PhD student Ana Laura Tohmé (UNSAM, Argentina) joins Dr. Manuel Salmerón Sánchez (Institute of Molecular Cell & Systems Biology, UK) for a 3-month secondment in his laboratories in Glasgow.

Bio-Tune Early Stage Researcher Ana Laura Tohmé (UNSAM, Argentina), a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Diego Pallarola, has recently arrived to Glasgow (UK) for a three-month seconment at the Institute of Molecular Cell & Systems Biology (University of Glasgow), under the supervision of Prof. Manuel Salmerón-Sánchez.

Despite the fact that the majority of medical implants have long-term success, premature failure due to unsuccessful osseointegration, leading to aseptic loosening, is still common. To improve osseointegration, various coatings have been utilized and the study of the interaction between Mesenchymal Stem Cells and these chemically-functionalized surfaces is of interest.

During her secondment with Prof. Manuel Salmerón-Sánchez at the University of Glasgow, Ana Laura will study the osteodifferentiation and adhesion behavior of MSCs on surfaces coated with fibronectin nanonetworks and BMP-mimetics as function of cell density.

The secondment will take place from June 6th to September 6th, 2022.
