Alejandra Ross Beraldi is a PhD student  at UNSAM (Argentina), currently carrying on a three months secondment at Dr. Roberto Spurio's Lab (UNICAM, Italy).

As part of this secondment, Alejandra offered a Seminar on "DNA-based sensors for miRNA detection" on May, 13th:

Many pathologies remain without differential and clear diagnosis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop tools for early diagnosis using specific biomarkers.

Micro RNA (miRNA) play a major role in gene regulation. Circulating miRNA in body fluids are promising diagnosis biomarkers due to their structural stability and distinct expression in many diseases.

Here, I present a systematic design procedure for performance optimization of DNA sequences as highly sensitive and selective probes for miRNA detection based on hybridization. I also present different pratforms to build biosensors for miRNAs using the DNA probes as the sensitive biological element.
